What do a leaf, a stone, and a seashell have in common with a square?

At first glance, maybe nothing. But in our Montessori classroom, they’re all part of a deeper exploration one that blends nature, geometry, and observation.

The Nature Table is a space where children bring natural items from their surroundings. Then comes the challenge:

Find something that matches a shape this time, the square.

Is it flat?

Does it have four sides?

Can it stack or sit within a square outline?

These aren’t just shape-matching tasks. They’re quiet investigations.

Through this activity, children sharpen their visual perception, learn to compare attributes, and connect abstract concepts (like shape) to real-world objects.

It’s learning that begins with curiosity and ends with discovery.
